How gear ratio works
The right ratio for your tyres and your driving
Differential gear ratio is the number of times the pinion turns for each turn of the wheels. A 3.73:1 ratio means the drive shaft turns 3.73 times for every turn of the wheel.
Changing tyre size changes the final drive ratio. Going from a 30 inch tyre to a 35 inch tyre changes it by around 17 percent, which can drop the engine out of its power band and hurt performance and fuel economy. To bring it back you change the ratio to suit. If you had 3.07 gears you want a ratio about 17 percent lower, such as 3.55. For more off road performance you might go to a 4.10 or lower.
When to change
Reasons to change your ratio
- Bigger tyres Larger tyres raise the effective ratio. A numerically lower ratio brings acceleration back.
- Towing and loads A lower ratio keeps the engine in its torque band under load and reduces heat.
- Off road A 4.10 or lower ratio improves crawl and control on tracks and hills.
- Highway economy A taller ratio drops cruising rpm for a quieter, more economical highway car.
- Track and drag Ratio chosen to match your engine, gearbox and the speed you run.
- Engine or gearbox swap A different power band or gear set often calls for a matching ratio change.
