Diagnosis

Common differential problems

If your car is doing any of this, bring it in for a look.

  • Whining or grinding: Continuous whining, grinding, whistling or grabbing noise at a set speed (0 to 40, 40 to 60, 60 to 80 or 80 to 100 km/h).
  • On and off noise: Noise that comes and goes at a certain speed like 60 to 80 km/h, or only in a particular gear such as 4th or 5th.
  • Oil leak: Differential oil leaking from the pinion seal, the wheel bearing seal or the breather.
  • Wheel bearings: Wheel bearings wearing out earlier than expected, or popping out.
  • Cornering or driveline noise: Noise on cornering, standing or moving, or noise that starts after a drive shaft breaks (Ford and Holden IRS).
  • Backlash and clunk: Backlash noise, or a clunk shifting forward to reverse or first to second (common in Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan Navara and similar).
